The Future of Treating Kidney Disease
Could Be in Your Genes

All it takes is a simple blood draw to find out

A Research Study Is Now Enrolling

We are seeking adults of recent African ancestry or geographic origin age 18-65 with proteinuria (protein in your urine) or proteinuric kidney disease to provide a one-time blood sample to determine the prevalence of a specific gene in the blood.

No medications are required to take part in this research study, but eligible participants may receive an invitation to participate in an optional follow-on study to assess the safety and efficacy of an investigational medication.

Those of African ancestry or geographic origin – including some Hispanics and Latinos – have a higher likelihood of developing chronic kidney disease.

Studies have shown that people of African and Caribbean descent with common variants to a specific gene (called apolipoprotein L1, or APOL1 for short) have an increased risk of developing chronic kidney disease (CKD).

Screening at the clinical level for this gene is not routinely done. Therefore, limited data has been collected to specifically gauge the prevalence of this gene variant for those with proteinuria and multiple forms of CKD.

Through participation in this study, you will learn if you have an APOL1 genotype that might put you at increased risk for CKD. It will further enable us to determine the overall prevalence of the high-risk gene variant in society at large.
